About This Blog

This blog is only MY opinion, and if you do not like what I think of a breeder, or you own one of their dogs, or you agree with what I'm saying, I would love to hear from you and know what you think! This blog is mainly for only me, so I can compare breeders to purchase pups from once I am a bit older. But, it is also a good source for people looking to find a breeder of border collies.

Border Collies's Hips (Severe Rating Through OFFA)

I will only be presenting 4 of the 9 dogs that came up with a severe rating through the OFFA.
Aida of Tokai Soto JP --- Black and White Female Born June 17th 1995 --- Has a daughter whose hips were rated Good, her half sister was rated moderate.  I am curious about the results of her daughter's father because with a rating of Severe (Hip Dysplasia), how could she produce a pup with a rating of Good.  It is possible that this specific female was injured or something else had happened to modify the results of this test before it was done.  The test was performed when she 6 years old.
Amin of Art Wan JP --- Black and White Male Born April 10th 1997 --- No relatives on record, but hips were tested as Normal.  Test was performed when he was 4 years old.
BWBC O. Tammy's Brandy Time --- Black and White Female Born June 1st 2002 --- Her sire, Quicksilver Record Time, had hips that turned out with a rating of Excellent.  Her dam, Tammy, had hips that finished with a result of Good.  This dog's full blood brother, BWBC/O Blur recieved a rating of fair.  This dog has many half siblings through her sire's side.  Of the two half siblings I looked at, they received Excellent ratings and their mothers had ratings of Good, just like this dog.  It seems unlikely this dog was born with severe hip dysplasia.  (Test performed at 2 years of age.)
Comebye Whole Lotta Rosie --- Black and White Female Born March 21st 2007 (Test-May 12th, 2010) --- Sire-Fair   Dam-Good    Full Sister-Excellent. . .This is odd how two dogs from the same litter can have opposite ratings.  One's hips are excellent, the other has Severe Hip Dysplasia.  Her half siblings all registered as good, fair or excellent, but none with a severe rating like this dog.

Border Collie Health (Not A Breeder) ---- CEA

Shoreland's Totally Unexpected (Male, Born Apr.2001)
Twincreekbanjo (Male, Born Apr.2007)
There were a total of 24 affected dogs listed on the website.  These are not dogs that are carriers by parentage, if they are, they were tested.  But dogs that were not tested, did not show up.  I'm sure this isn't a complete list.  Next, I will do hips through www.offa.org.

Shoreland Kennel (Breeder of Aussies and BC's)

I have decided to review this breeder because, when I came upon a website I got from Hob Nob's website, I looked up dogs affected with CEA, and Shoreland Kennel had a dog that had been affected.  The dog was born April 17th, 2001 and was named Shoreland's Totally Unexpected.  There is another dog, with the same parents who is classified as Normal.  As for the kennel, they have about 70 BC's and 34 Aussies.  These are the dogs mentioned on the website and the total is over 100 dogs.  Most of these dogs may be co-owned, but I am not willing to check each individual page for the dogs.  There website also says "We are just starting to think about retiring from breeding, and have select adults available for sale.  I want to take my time to find the right homes for my dogs, but I definately plan to downsize some.  Please contact us for information regarding these older finished champions and a few youngsters as well.  Stud dogs also available."  This is a direct quote from their Available Dogs page.  Of the pages I looked into, the dogs looked very healthy, with thick show BC coats.  The colors I've seen at the kennel are Black, Gold, Chocolate, Tricolor, Merle and Blue.  I personally would never buy a pup, because they have too much of a show dog look about them and I prefer a skinnier, working dog look with not such a large coat.

Zig's Border Collies

This seems to be an excellent breeder.  The puppies are raised in the family's home, they offer a "puppy packet" to new owners of their puppies, she only ships by land because of her views on the air shipping experience, and the dogs/puppies are in great condition.  The one drawback to this breeder is that they do not mention that they do health testing on the dogs they breed and even if they do, they do not post the results of the testing for people looking into purchasing one of their pups.  But they do say that they keep very accurate records on each pup from the day they are born.  Personally, if they do health testing on their dogs, I would definitely purchase one of these puppies.
